Canary Island Holidays In Lanzarote

There are seven main Canary Islands in total and Lanzarote is the eastern most link in this chain. And all are located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of West Africa, quite close to the Tropic of Cancer. Which helps to account for why these islands enjoy such popularity as a holiday destination – as they bask in sunshine all year round.

As a result of this clement climate the Canaries are the second busiest holiday region in Spain after Catalonia – with its attractions of the Costa Brava and Barcelona. And Lanzarote welcomes around an eighth of the total visitors every year. Yet despite this it remains much less touched by tourism than the larger islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Which have both witnessed large scale development in the south. On Lanzarote by contrast there are no high rise buildings to blot the landscape – so much of the island remains largely as it has been for centuries. With plenty of unspoilt countryside for visitors to explore.

That being said most tourists tend to stay in one of the islands main holiday resorts – as this is where the bulk of the best hotels, apartments and villas in Lanzarote are located. Although rural tourism has also started to grow in popularity in recent years too. With a number of new fincas and rural hotels opening across Lanzarote.

Unlike some other holiday islands Lanzarote is great for exploring – as there is loads to do and see here. Lanzarote car hire  is also very competitively priced – making it possible to rent a small two door vehicle for as little as €15 per day. The island also measures just 60km by 40km so it´s very easy to explore.

One of the best ways to get to know Lanzarote is simply to drive around – as its hard to get lost and the roads are all pretty quiet once outside of the main resorts. This introduces visitors to pretty little villages such as Yaiza – which all boast whitewashed houses and well maintained and colourful gardens. As well as larger towns – such as the former capital of Teguise. Which is steeped in history as this is where the Spanish first established a settlement in the Canary Islands, so there are lots of buildings here dating back as far as the 15th century.

Many visitors end up falling in love with the island – and buying Lanzarote property as a result. Which they can then rent out to other tourists or use as holiday home for future visits.
