In the case of extensions, those reasons could be that the hair is synthetic, or if it’s human hair, it’s probably either poor quality or there’s not much hair included in each extension. Or sometimes the extension can be a mix of human and synthetic hair, which doesn’t make sense at all, because you cannot style synthetic hair in the same way as human hair.

One of the ways to know if the extension you’re considering is good quality is to look at its weight. You want a good weight, which comes from the thickness or volume of hair in the piece. Thin, and therefore lighter weight, extensions will look thinner than your own hair at the bottom if you’re getting them to lengthen your hair. And if you want extra volume, they’ll give very little.

Here’s the standard you should go by: A 20-inch extension length should weigh at least 120g, and 160g is even better. If the extension is shorter it’s OK for it to weigh less, and if it’s longer it should weigh more. (Be careful with extensions that are really long, though. They may put too much stress on your own hair roots.)

It’s worth your while to buy good quality clip in hair extensions because they’ll last much longer and tangle less than their cheaper competition if you treat them well — just like your own hair, in fact.
